Childhood Adversity and Mental Health

Why Early Support Matters

Childhood should be a time of safety, discovery, and connection. Yet for too many children, early experiences shape their emotional worlds in ways no child should ever face. At KidsAid, we see this every day.

Last year, 60% of the children we supported had been exposed to abuse, either as victims or witnesses. These experiences rarely occur in isolation – they often layer and compound over time. In fact, 90% of the children and young people we supported had experienced multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and nearly one in three endured four or more.

These numbers are more than statistics—they represent real children, real lives, and real futures. By understanding the profound impact of early adversity, we can provide the stability, care, and connection children need to grow, recover, and thrive.

What Are Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)?

ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur before age 18 and can have long-lasting effects on a child’s mental and physical health. ACEs include:

Other factors, such as bullying, community violence, racism, or the loss of a caregiver, can also be considered ACEs.

Understanding these experiences is crucial. A 2025 University of Aberdeen study of over 16,000 UK adults found that those who experienced childhood adversity were far more likely to face chronic pain and poor mental health at age 50. The study also showed that the greater the number of ACEs, the higher the risk of long-term health challenges, demonstrating how early experiences affect well-being throughout life.

At KidsAid, this evidence reinforces the importance of early intervention. When children receive timely support to process and heal from adversity, we don’t just help them in the moment—we may also reduce the risk of lifelong mental health and physical challenges.

Why Early Support Matters

The Developing Brain Is Shaped by Relationships

Children learn safety, trust, and emotional regulation through early relationships. Supportive interventions—therapeutic play, counselling, or family support—can strengthen these foundations after trauma.

Early Intervention Prevents Problems from Escalating

Unaddressed trauma can lead to behavioural challenges, school difficulties, low self-esteem, and ongoing emotional distress. Early support helps children process emotions, develop healthier coping strategies, and rebuild confidence long before adulthood.

Families Feel Supported, Not Judged

Many caregivers report feeling overwhelmed before connecting with KidsAid. Early support helps families understand trauma-informed approaches, empowering them to support their child with compassion and confidence.

Healing Is Absolutely Possible

This is the message every family needs to hear. With safe relationships, therapeutic support, and a compassionate environment, children can regain control, joy, and hope, even after significant adversity.
